Each July, the cooperative community's brightest youth representatives gather in Washington , DC for the annual Youth Leadership Conference. Each youth is chosen to represent his or her state on the Youth Leadership Council (YLC) by his or her state delegation during the NRECA Youth Tour in Washington, D.C.
The purpose of the YLC conference is to build leadership and public speaking skills, and to enhance the delegates' knowledge of the energy industry and the cooperative form of business. These students will also make presentations at their statewide and local cooperative annual meetings.
One benefit of serving on the YLC is that the representatives are given the opportunity to attend and participate in the NRECA resolutions process during NRECA's Annual Meeting. Also, the YLC selects a national spokesperson to address the membership at the NRECA Annual Meeting and to address the Youth Tour delegates the following year.
Five Talquin Electric student delegates have advanced to represent the entire state of Florida while serving one year on the Youth Leadership Council. Talquin congratulates the following students from this Cooperative who have represented Florida on the Youth Leadership Council:
Steven Roberts was selected to be the national spokesperson for the YLC and presented a speech in front of 14,000 people in San Diego, California.
