Important Update: Preparing for Hurricane Helene – Our Commitment to You

| Alerts

Dear Members,

As we face the impending arrival of Hurricane Helene, which is now projected to make landfall around 8:00PM on Thursday, September 26, we want to emphasize the seriousness of this situation. With a slight eastward shift in its path, we are preparing for potentially severe impacts to our communities.

We’ve taken proactive measures to ensure we’re ready to respond quickly and safely. This includes scheduling extra personnel, preparing our crews to work extended hours, checking equipment, and coordinating with nearby cooperatives and contractors for additional support. We’re also working closely with federal, state, and local emergency agencies to guarantee a well-coordinated response.

The time for personal preparations is now over, and your safety and well-being are paramount. If you need assistance finding a shelter in the Big Bend region, please visit Florida’s Division of Emergency Management website here: SHELTERS.

As Talquin braces for impact, we recognize that dangerous winds, heavy rain, and flooding could lead to extended power outages. Rest assured, our dedicated staff will be working before, during, and after the storm to ensure a swift response. Once the storm has passed and conditions permit, our crews will immediately begin assessing damage and working to restore power.

Remember, our restoration protocols restore power safely to the greatest number of Members in the shortest time possible. Before we can provide estimated restoration times, we must first complete a preliminary damage assessment, which may take up to 24 hours or longer after the storm passes. Additionally, line crews can only be deployed when weather conditions are safe.

For your safety, please stay away from downed power lines and report them immediately. Avoid entering flooded areas, and give our crews the space they need to work. If you plan to use a generator, be sure to operate it in a well-ventilated area, outside the home, to avoid carbon monoxide risks.

We are fully committed to restoring power as quickly and safely as possible and appreciate your patience and understanding. This message will likely be our last communication until after the storm hits but know that we are staffed and ready to respond.

Stay informed by tuning into local news and following advice from emergency management officials.

Please take care and stay safe.

Sincerely,
Talquin Electric Cooperative
