Talquin Water and Wastewater will be performing unidirectional flushing in the Riversink Water System, as well as the Flowers, Scenic Stream, and Edgewood Subdivisions in the Wakulla County Water System, from February 18 to February 21, between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM each day.
Why is Talquin Flushing the Water Mains?
Over time, minerals and sediment can accumulate in water mains due to natural formation. Flushing removes these deposits, helping to maintain a clean, safe, and reliable drinking water supply. This proactive maintenance keeps your water fresh and clear while ensuring the system operates efficiently.
How Does Unidirectional Flushing Work?
Unidirectional flushing forces water through the mains at high speed and discharges it through designated hydrants. This high-velocity flow scours the pipes, removes sediment buildup, and enhances water clarity. Hydrants are kept open until the water runs clear.
What to Expect During Flushing?
- You may experience temporary pressure changes and discolored water from minerals and sediment being flushed out.
- Water service should not be disrupted during the flushing process.
- Talquin will notify affected Members directly before flushing begins.
- Postcards were mailed to Members in the affected areas.
- Updates will be posted directly on our website.
Can I Use my Water During this Time?
The short answer is YES. If you notice discoloration, simply run cold water until it clears to flush out any remaining particles from your system. You may also experience temporary low water pressure during the flushing process, but it will return to normal once the work is complete.
What to Do If Your Water is Discolored?
If you notice discoloration, follow these steps:
- Run a cold tap (preferably an outdoor hose or bathtub faucet) for a few minutes, up to 15 minutes maximum.
- Avoid using taps with water filters, as sediment may clog them.
- Do not use hot water taps—this could pull sediment into your hot water tank.
- Catch some water in a light colored cup or container, if it is clear, you can use your water.
- If discoloration continues after five minutes, wait 30 minutes and try again. If the issue persists, please contact Talquin directly.
